XP SP3 removes Internet Explorer Desktop Icon

After installing Service Pack 3 for Microsoft Windows XP I noticed it seems to be removing the Internet Explorer desktop Icon.  If you go into Display Properties, Display Tab and select Customize Desktop to add it the option is no longer there.

To readd this desktop icon you’ll need to perform a registry edit.  It’s a good idea to backup your registery (using file, export) before editing however there is not much to be concerned about if you stick to the directions.

Goto Start, Run and type “regedit”

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel In the right hand pane

Next double-click {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} entry and edit it’s value from 1 to 0

After a short while you’ll notice Internet Explorer has reappared on your desktop.
